psychological tight-rope walk

Some good tips. It's funny how when you look into these things in depth, it becomes a psychological tight-rope walk.

On the one hand you are telling visitors to "be bold", to go ahead and make the wiki edits that need to be made. And surely you need to be making such edits yourself, to move the content forward, to lead by example, and just as a demonstration of your own "be bold" advice.

On the other hand, when we really start to empathise with potential contributors, and try to think about how we can encourage participation, we end up following principles along the lines of "don't over organise" and "ease back from making tempting wiki edits".

I agree with all your tips, and when I am wiki-facilitating, I do try to empathise, and strike a balance. Sometimes I enjoy this psychological aspect of wikis ...but sometimes it feels like I am chasing my own tail.
