What is community informatics?

CI is the field of study and practice devoted to helping communities create and apply information and communication technologies to achieve their goals. CI spans communities from rural to urban and includes all domains of life, such as health, economic development, education, arts and culture, and science. Core to CI is the analysis of information needs, capacity, and practices within and across communities. It deals with how knowledge is created and shared in all forms and media, from face-to-face conversations, performances, social service programs, and storytelling to web-based classes, exhibits, citizen science, and library research to broadcast media and print publications.
