Research Method
podcast 2 - description of podcast 2
So given that I was required to plan and implement a piece of Action Research, I then opted to saddle myself with various unnecessary but interesting complications.
* The subject of my research is to develop and learn about a type of research itself. Meta research. But to learn about it by doing it as well
* Given the uncharted territory I wanted to explore, one of the qualities of the method employed is a high degree of Emergence. Emergent reseach doesn't begin with a clear hypothosis or research question, it allows for the learning about the situation to guide the direction of the research as it emerges. (This seems to unnerve a lot of people!)
* Action research is necessarily cyclical, with the most common description of cycle being something like
evaluate > plan > act > collect data > analyse data > reflect > plan the next cycle and so on.
But in order to ramp up my experience with DAR enough to be able to share some examples with my peers I designed to do several small cycles of disparate research in order to develop and validate the beginning of the concept in my own mind, then feed the overall picture into a pilot exhibition and adjust and improve the overall picture from there. That's difficult to explain in words so below is a diagram from the original research proposal which attempts to portray this cycles within cycles architecture. Of course, the reality turned out somewhat different, but that was anticipated.
