Article: BBC News – Tidal energy trial in Thames offers glimpse of future

The River Thames in London has an enormous tidal change twice a day so it makes sense to try and harness some of that as a renewable energy source.

The turbines can operate at a range of depths

A tidal energy farm providing green energy to London could become a reality if a two-month trial proves successful.

A tidal turbine is being installed in the River Thames alongside World War II ship HQS Wellington in central London.

If the trial proves successful and does not adversely affect the environment, hundreds of turbines could be installed between Kent and London.

Energy company Nautricity said a tidal energy farm would generate enough electricity to power 35,000 homes.

Turnout for the anti-cuts demo and march to Trafalgar Square has been revised upwards to around  400,000 as people take to the streets in London to protest against the government’s planned public service cuts.

Greenwich Tall Ship – 4 Masted Juan Sebastián de Elcano

Some interesting ships can be seen docked in the Thames, such as the Greenwich warship a couple of years ago. This weekend brought a Spanish Navy training ship, the four masted tall ship called Juan Sebastián de Elcano which is one of the largest and oldest tall ships still operational.

The video was taken from onboard one of the Hurricane Clipper river boat catamarans which provide a commuter service as well as sightseeing on the river Thames and now accept Oystercard onboard for payment as well as pre-paid tickets.
