a water gods tree
Originally uploaded by Andyrob.
On a remote mountainside in Wales, this tree next to a waterfall is being used to leave presents to the water gods, mostly in memoriam of friends or relatives. It’s possible that ashes are scattered into the river in some kind of pagan funeral service. Does anybody know more about this please?
Emergent path June 13, 2005
Posted by Andy Roberts in : Memetics, hi res photos, wildlife , 2commentsA steep rise on part of a popular walk.
Many human footsteps begin to wear away the turf.
At some point it became slightly easier to walk in the same footprints as previous walkers, and then the effect magnified and the pattern locked in.
Of course a few awkward people will still walk to one side or the other, but these strays are treated with suspicion - and then disdain.
Finally, a sign is erected:
“Please keep to the path”

The symbol and the thing April 20, 2005

First, a map which is a symbolic representation of a real place, called Penpol creek.

( Go back to the previous post about google maps if you want to scroll around there a further afield )
Now here’s a thumbnail and hi-res photograph of Penpol creek.
But that is still only a photograph, a digital object which captures a a tiny fragment from only the visual information which was available at one particular moment in time from one chosen viewpoint. The relationship between the photograph and actually being there for that moment could be likened to the difference between the map and the picture.
A short while later…….
car free April 19, 2005
Posted by Andy Roberts in : hi res photos , add a commentJust after the London Snickers on Sunday, Greenwich remained car free for an hour or two and gave us a glimpse of how pleasant life could be without the constant drone, danger and stress of continuous traffic in an otherwise agreeable town. Reclaim the streets!
