Looking at the timetable for Dalston Junction to West Croydon, it appears we will have to change trains somewhere between Surrey Quays and Norwood. How stupid is that?

As an added annoyance, there are no more trains on the Richmond>Stratford line than they were before

I suspect that another reason for the sideways seating is to make them feel more 'tube' like (new circle and district line trains have abandoned the compartment-style seating too).

Whilst the Overground may technically be a train, it's being designed as more of a metro-style turn-up-and-go service, with the timetable becoming irrelevant as the frequencies go up.

Makes sense from the perspective of best serving the most amount of people (peak commuters), but does have the side effect of making it slightly less comfortable for longer-distance travellers. At least they're air-conditioned though!
