Life on Mars
In both of the freeby London newspapers yesterday on the tube there was a story about the picture from planet Mars which seemed to show a human like figure walking across the Martian surface. At first glance the picture looks like a joke or a fake, reminding me of the “Elvis found on Moon” headlines from the launch of a new tabloid in the eighties. But in the articles they seem to claim that it’s a genuine photograph from a Mars Explorer that shows a part of the rocky terrain that just happens to look very much like a bipedal torso with head and arms. Here it is again on the BBC website. Now the newspapers may have enhanced the illusion slightly in their image processing, but it does beg the question what are the chances of a randomly formed piece of rock looking so much like a recognisable figure competely out of context?

Then I remembered the rock I saw with my own eyes when travelling along the Canyon de Sil in Galicia, northern Spain. This photograph is straight from my own camera in 2005
It’s the old ink blot phenomenon again, like seeing faces in clouds. Our human brains are so wired by evolution up to recognise the specific patterns of faces and human forms or figures that we tend to over-detect them, and given enough random material to look at, we’ll eventually notice one somewhere. So is there really any evidence of Life on Mars? - that’s for another post!

I think the technical term for what you are describing is ‘pareidolia’. I read a really good article about the Mars ‘photos’ yesterday on the Planetary Society Blog (Thinks to self - I have a really weird range of blogs in my feedreader lol!)
This is ridiculous! this is Nasa we are talking about here! They airbrush out anything that even remotely resembles a ufo on satellite pictures they release to the public. This is just another successful attempt at discrediting serious cases. It also gives the uninformed scared citizen another reason to justify his /her disbelief; all the while making it harder for any single individual to be curious about the subject because of fear of being ridiculed. Its funny how stuff like this gets all over the internet in no time and real projects by serious professionals who are putting there careers on the line (like disclosure project) get no spotlight. Mexico has mass sightings of ufos from there own mexico city being aired nationally but no one seems to know about that. YEah you just keep on believing everything they spoon feed you. Thats so much easier than doing your own research.
Nothing surprises me, I’m also from Cardiff, where we get aliens coming through the rift on a weekly basis. “Human figure found on Mars” wouldn’t hit the front page of the Echo on an average Friday
We’ve also got to think, with the accusations thrown at Nasa and similar organizations, is this a means of building more interest around the subject? Seems strange this has come about so soon after the Virgin Galaxy coverage.

I designed the Mars rovers 1987 and they found life,people like us who wear clothes and hats,no breathing devices,plus many diverse animals 2004.Yet really the 1976 Viking missions first found large life,at least large animals who visited the rovers(pics avail) and Nasa/military covered it up.Pres.Johnson 1966 also covered up that the Mariner probes detected lights on the surface of Mars that were unexplainable and he & military silenced scientists and destroyed evidence.
