I have already informed on this site about Mariza’s musicians for the “Terra” disc world tour
(umlike on the disc itself).
I know the guys & saw them playing “after hours”, on one of the Fado houses in Bairro Alto
in Lisbon.
The Guitarra Portuguessa is played by Angelo Freire. (young; black streight hair)
The Viola (guitarra acustica) is played by Diogo Clemente. (short curly hair; short beard…)
He also writes Fado songs, for Mariza, Carminho, & possibly others,
both words & music, & sometimes only one of it…
The bass player I do not know…

I saw Mariza yesterday in The Jones Hall (Houston, TX) she was magnificent and so were the 5 musicians playing with her. Here you can find their names and due credit:
The Portuguese Fado guitar is joined by British guitarist Dominic Miller (one of Sting’s supporting musician for the last twenty years, by three piano players, Brazilian Ivan Lins and Cubans Chucho Valdês and Ivan “Melon” Lewis, by Spanish flamenco guitarist Javier Limón, and by Spanish percussionist Piraña (Paco De Lucia’s favourite percussionist). Mariza’s voice blends perfectly with Cape-verdian Tito Paris’ and Afro-hispanic Concha Buika’s. After Jorge Fernando, Carlos Maria Trindade and Jacques Morelenbaum, Mariza has chosen Spanish Javier Limón as the producer for “Terra” – what a challenge! But in this cosmopolitan mixture of flamenco and morna, jazz and folk music, we hear a constant Portuguese sound; let’s call it Fado or simply Mariza.

Does anybody have any knowledge/information about Mariza’s tour
on end of June or begining of July?
I wish to know if she’s having concerts in Portugal, on those dates,
where & when…
I plan visiting Portugal at this time,
& wish to see her again…

I have replied to U,
& for some reason I can’t see it submitted… so once again:
I’ve too seen Angelo Freire performing with Mariza in concerts over in Portugal,
on summer 2008.
I’ve also seen him play & sing in bars in Lisbon.
The kid’s qualities are amazing!!!
I only wish for him that when the time comes, soon, I hope,
he’ll have the energy, the wish & the means
to make his own disk.
Diogo, who plays the viola, I think is also as talanted (at least),
& I wish for him the same…
As I had written to Fiona on the 20.09.2008 :
“on Mariza’s recent tour with Terra disk.
On the viola with the short curly black hair is Diogo, maybe the same diogo who had performed for that albom.
On the Guitara Portuguesa, the young guy with the dark short straight hair is Angelo Freire.
I’ve seen them performing in some Fado bars in Portugal, where they like to create their own music – from their own hurt – as opposed to “only” work by making the more structured music during the concerts with Mariza… They are both “bigger than life (!!!)”, both as musicians, playing the guitars & as singers… On stage, Mariza gives them alot of credit, more than once, during the concert. I saw her with them “live” on the Delta-Tejo pestival in Lisbon on the 20 of last July, a fantastic performance of Mariza, the guy from Cabo-Verde, & all the musicians… Unlucky for them that the credits are not given also on the video clips of terra etc. It’s a shame…”

Well, I envy U seeing Mariza’s concert, her & her team…
As for the Portuguese guitarra player, Angelo Freire,
I’ve seen /heard him numerous times,
both on Mariza concerts in Portugal & in bars of Lisboa,
& I cannot agree with U more.
The guy is enormous in his playing’s qualities, & in his singing qualities…
I wish for him that he’ll soon make a disk of his own…

Deus, não conheço Portugal nem tampouco das ruas daquela cidade, mas me vi levado pela mão a sentir a chuva no rosto frio e, pelo milagre daquela voz, sentir o calor aquecer novamente meu coração.
Vê-se nessa mulher, o dom máximo legado pela mão de Deus.
E que Ele a conserve!

I’ve seen Mariza a few times now. I just saw her tonight in New Bedford MA. She now is using a new “guitarrista” for the portuguese guitar, his name is Angelo Freire this kid is amazing and yes KID. he is only 19. I was just in Lisbon in February and watched him perform at Casa Luso in Alfama (section of Lisbon).

If you are in the area, Mariza is performing a second night at the Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford MA tomorrow 3/14/09

Just wanted to let you know about a wonderful fadista in the USA, Ramana Vieira, who has a CD that will be out on March 24th: “Lágrimas De Raihna or Tears Of A Queen”.
