Paul Velho sent me this you tube video within facebook and I just had to embed it here in memory of Amalia Rodrigues.

“The Pride of Portuguese Passion. For those who are Portuguese, you’ll shed a tear. For those who are not, you’ll wish you were born here.”

I have been looking everywhere for the name of Mariza’s Portuguese Guitar’ artist and I cannot find it. While I believe that Mariza is magnificent and deserves her enormous following, I think it’s a shame that her guitar trio isn’t recognized for their talents. The one who strums the Portuguese Guitar has magical fingers. His talent is indescribable. I just want to know who he is. Somebody has to know. Please share this information so that he gets the recognition he so deserves!

Hi Connie,
As a guitarist myself I agree. The same thing seems to happen with Spanish flamenco artists. The singers gets all the attention while the brilliant guitarists are often treated as mere accompanists. There have also been some great Fado artists in the past who both play and sing at the same time, as in the anglophone singer-songwriter tradition.
Anyway, it shouldn’t be beyond the capabilities of the internet to find out the name of the guitarra portuguesa players with Mariza.

Actually Andy, I have spent a good deal of time looking on the internet. I Googled ‘Mariza’ and there are many websites about HER. I’ve checked out a lot of them (In fact, that’s how I stumbled onto THIS website),they really don’t offer much information about her orchestra, if any at all. I even checked Amazon looking for grahics of her CD’s to see if I could get any info from the insert. No luck.

I’m surprised I got a reply to my ‘plea’ so quickly. Thanks!

Well you did the right thing by asking the question here because the answer is probably more likely to be forthcoming by asking people rather than directly from search engines. If you can find a Portuguese language forum with good participation, a general one about music, for example, then the chances are that somebody will know somebody who knows pretty quickly. Then come back and tell the world here and on youtube to give the guys the credit that’s due :-)
It’s a challenge!
For information on Mariza in English I assume you’ve tried starting from World music central.

His name is LUIS GUEREIRRO and yes, he is just fantastic. He plays the p.g. like he is making love to it and you see every emotion on his face. Muito Lindo.

ANTONIO NETO is the acoustic guitar player with Mariza and he is wonderful also.

Not sure about bass guitar player’s first name. I think the surname is de Sousa.

Mariza e muito, muito lindo. Fabuloso e arrepiante!

Mariza is Great, but I too thought the guitar player is AMAZING!!
Fiona is right, his name is Luis GUEREIRO and he is unbelievable!!
I watched a concert of Mariza in Lisbon and she introduced her band members, she gave Luis great credit.

Mariza sings with different guitarists. Perhaps you are thinking of Custódio Castelo who was part of the trio in “Fado em Mim” along with António Neto and Jorge Fernando on the “viola de fado”.

That link to Custódio Castelo doesn’t seem to be working? Here it is:

Thanks Bev…but actually the name I’m looking for belongs to the younger dark-haired man who plays the pear-shaped guitar. You can see him on THIS YouTube video (”Gente da Minha Terra”, above). They show a ‘close-up’ of him a couple of times. He’s just marvelous!

With reference to the musicians who played with Mariza on the David Letterman show (check out YouTube) and across the US in October 2008, here is what know (first hand) because the 3 musicians came to my house on October 27 after the concert at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. The name of the Portuguese guitarist is Luis Guerreiro–he owns a guitarra from Oscar Cardoso which has an open back. The name of the Spanish guitarist (AKA viola in Portuguese) is Antonio Neto–he is playing a Conde Hermanos from Madrid. The person who was playing the contra bass guitar is Vasco Sousa–he is playing an instrument made by Esteve in Spain. I am the importer for Esteve Guitars in California

The best portuguese guitarist ever is Carlos Paredes.

As one of your commentators rightly asserts, Mariza’s guitarist (playing the Portuguese guitar) is Luís Guereirro. Having had the privilege of handling all of Mariza’s UK press, radio and TV PR since she started recording (i.e since ‘Fado Em Mim’), and having seen her various bands many times, Luis is someone who has been a wonderfully inventive fixture for almost the whole of her career. He was featured prominently in a SONGLINES magazine 4-page feature on the Portuguese guitar by Simon Broughton (published in November 2007).
