Mariza – Portuguese Fado singer

Paul Velho sent me this Mariza fado singer youTube video within facebook and I just had to embed it here in memory of Amalia Rodrigues.

“The Pride of Portuguese Passion. For those who are Portuguese, you’ll shed a tear. For those who are not, you’ll wish you were born here.”

    And isn’t Mariza just marvelous!

  2. Connie says:

I have been looking everywhere for the name of Mariza’s Portuguese Guitar’ artist and I cannot find it. While I believe that Mariza is magnificent and deserves her enormous following, I think it’s a shame that her guitar trio isn’t recognized for their talents. The one who strums the Portuguese Guitar has magical fingers. His talent is indescribable. I just want to know who he is. Somebody has to know. Please share this information so that he gets the recognition he so deserves!

    • Andy Roberts says:

      Hi Connie,
As a guitarist myself I agree. The same thing seems to happen with Spanish flamenco artists. The singers gets all the attention while the brilliant guitarists are often treated as mere accompanists. There have also been some great Fado artists in the past who both play and sing at the same time, as in the anglophone singer-songwriter tradition.
Anyway, it shouldn’t be beyond the capabilities of the internet to find out the name of the guitarra portuguesa players with Mariza.

      • Connie says:

Actually Andy, I have spent a good deal of time looking on the internet. I Googled ‘Mariza’ and there are many websites about HER. I’ve checked out a lot of them (In fact, that’s how I stumbled onto THIS website),they really don’t offer much information about her orchestra, if any at all. I even checked Amazon looking for grahics of her CD’s to see if I could get any info from the insert. No luck.

I’m surprised I got a reply to my ‘plea’ so quickly. Thanks!

        • Andy Roberts says:

Well you did the right thing by asking the question here because the answer is probably more likely to be forthcoming by asking people rather than directly from search engines. If you can find a Portuguese language forum with good participation, a general one about music, for example, then the chances are that somebody will know somebody who knows pretty quickly. Then come back and tell the world here and on youtube to give the guys the credit that’s due :-)
          It’s a challenge!
For information on Mariza in English I assume you’ve tried starting from World music central.

      • mike says:

Try the sleeve notes on her albums.Maybe???

      • Yona Holzman-Benshalom says:

I have already informed on this site about Mariza’s musicians for the “Terra” disc world tour
        (umlike on the disc itself).
I know the guys & saw them playing “after hours”, on one of the Fado houses in Bairro Alto
        in Lisbon.
The Guitarra Portuguessa is played by Angelo Freire. (young; black streight hair)
The Viola (guitarra acustica) is played by Diogo Clemente. (short curly hair; short beard…)
He also writes Fado songs, for Mariza, Carminho, & possibly others,
both words & music, & sometimes only one of it…
The bass player I do not know…

    • Fiona says:

His name is LUIS GUEREIRRO and yes, he is just fantastic. He plays the p.g. like he is making love to it and you see every emotion on his face. Muito Lindo.

ANTONIO NETO is the acoustic guitar player with Mariza and he is wonderful also.

Not sure about bass guitar player’s first name. I think the surname is de Sousa.

Mariza e muito, muito lindo. Fabuloso e arrepiante!

      • Isabel Baptista says:

Mariza is Great, but I too thought the guitar player is AMAZING!!
Fiona is right, his name is Luis GUEREIRO and he is unbelievable!!
I watched a concert of Mariza in Lisbon and she introduced her band members, she gave Luis great credit.

    • Brent Hightower says:

Her Portuguese Guitar players name is, and I’m not sure about the spelling, Louis Gurrerro.

    • Klementyna says:

The guitarra portuguesa’s player that performa with Mariza is Luis Guerreiro

      • kincho says:

I saw Mariza yesterday in The Jones Hall (Houston, TX) she was magnificent and so were the 5 musicians playing with her. Here you can find their names and due credit:
The Portuguese Fado guitar is joined by British guitarist Dominic Miller (one of Sting’s supporting musician for the last twenty years, by three piano players, Brazilian Ivan Lins and Cubans Chucho Valdês and Ivan “Melon” Lewis, by Spanish flamenco guitarist Javier Limón, and by Spanish percussionist Piraña (Paco De Lucia’s favourite percussionist). Mariza’s voice blends perfectly with Cape-verdian Tito Paris’ and Afro-hispanic Concha Buika’s. After Jorge Fernando, Carlos Maria Trindade and Jacques Morelenbaum, Mariza has chosen Spanish Javier Limón as the producer for “Terra” – what a challenge! But in this cosmopolitan mixture of flamenco and morna, jazz and folk music, we hear a constant Portuguese sound; let’s call it Fado or simply Mariza.

  3. Bev Trayner says:

Mariza sings with different guitarists. Perhaps you are thinking of Custódio Castelo who was part of the trio in “Fado em Mim” along with António Neto and Jorge Fernando on the “viola de fado”.

  4. Bev Trayner says:

That link to Custódio Castelo doesn’t seem to be working? Here it is:
    http://custodiocastelo.blogs.sapo.pt/

  5. Connie says:

Thanks Bev…but actually the name I’m looking for belongs to the younger dark-haired man who plays the pear-shaped guitar. You can see him on THIS YouTube video (“Gente da Minha Terra”, above). They show a ‘close-up’ of him a couple of times. He’s just marvelous!

    • Yona Benshalom says:

      Dear Coni
As U so wish to give the credits to the musicians,
I enclose a partial copy of my message from the 20.sep. 2008 ,
about the portuguese guitar player on the “terra” disk,
that U may spot also from the video on her site for the “Rosa” song.
“on her recent tour with Terra disk.
On the viola with the short curly black hair is Diogo, maybe the same diogo who had performed for that albom.
On the Guitara Portuguesa, the young guy with the dark short straight hair is Angelo Freire.
I’ve seen them performing in some Fado bars in Portugal, where they like to create their own music – from their own hurt – as opposed to “only” work by making the more structured music during the concerts with Mariza… They are both “bigger than life (!!!)”, both as musicians, playing the guitars & as singers… On stage, Mariza gives them alot of credit, more than once, during the concert. I saw her with them “live” on the Delta-Tejo pestival in Lisbon on the 20 of last July, a fantastic performance of Mariza, the guy from Cabo-Verde, & all the musicians… Unlucky for them that the credits are not given also on the video clips of terra etc. It’s a shame…
      Yona Benshalom,
      Herzlia, Israel”
That may give some credit to the ones who diserve it…
      All the best,
      Yona

  6. Ron Fernandez says:

With reference to the musicians who played with Mariza on the David Letterman show (check out YouTube) and across the US in October 2008, here is what know (first hand) because the 3 musicians came to my house on October 27 after the concert at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. The name of the Portuguese guitarist is Luis Guerreiro–he owns a guitarra from Oscar Cardoso which has an open back. The name of the Spanish guitarist (AKA viola in Portuguese) is Antonio Neto–he is playing a Conde Hermanos from Madrid. The person who was playing the contra bass guitar is Vasco Sousa–he is playing an instrument made by Esteve in Spain. I am the importer for Esteve Guitars in California

  7. Ana says:

The best portuguese guitarist ever is Carlos Paredes.
It’s not Fado but in my opinion is worth listeninig.

  8. Gloria says:

Always a pleasure to listen to her, the guitarist work is wonderful, thanks for the link and I agree that the best Portuguese guitarist ever is Carlos Paredes.

  9. John Crosby music publicity / PR says:

As one of your commentators rightly asserts, Mariza’s guitarist (playing the Portuguese guitar) is Luís Guereirro. Having had the privilege of handling all of Mariza’s UK press, radio and TV PR since she started recording (i.e since ‘Fado Em Mim’), and having seen her various bands many times, Luis is someone who has been a wonderfully inventive fixture for almost the whole of her career. He was featured prominently in a SONGLINES magazine 4-page feature on the Portuguese guitar by Simon Broughton (published in November 2007).

      Dear Mr Crosby,

      I am Fiona [as above].

You may be able to assist me with a query re Mariza’s manager/husband/percussionist. In the Lisboa concert, which percussionist is he? The dish [gorgeous guy!] with the short dark hair, long blonde hair or medium length, very curly dark hair. All very handsome men. Please, please, please, please can you tell me, if you know, which you must if you are handling her press, which is she married to. If possible, can you tell me also, the names of the other 2 guys, husband or not. Also, does Mariza have any children? How gorgeous would they be. I don’t know how long she and Joao have been married either. Information on Mariza in Australia is sketchy at best. Thank God for the Internet.

If you are able to tell me this for no other purpose than just to know, you are a legend. Lucky you having connection with Mariza. It must be something special to know her. I have all her albums and can sing with her. My Portuguese pronunciation is perfect thanks to her. The rest is yet to come.

      Thanking you.

        Dear Fiona @ others,
I’m not sure which 3 people U are refering to,
but as Ur mail is recent (08/2008), I may give U & the rest some information about the 2 guitarists Mariza performs with,
on her recent tour with Terra disk.
On the viola with the short curly black hair is Diogo, maybe the same diogo who had performed for that albom.
On the Guitara Portuguesa, the young guy with the dark short straight hair is Angelo Freire.

      • Fiona says:

        Dear Yona,

Thank you for your reply. I realise now I failed completely to state what I was referring to. Here it is. On her “Concerto em Lisboa” dvd is a song called “Feiro de Castro”. On this track, at the end, there are 3 gentlemen playing percussion [brilliantly, I might add!]. A long-haired blonde guy, a dark-haired guy and a dark and curly haired guy. Do you know which one, if any of them, is Joao Pedro Ruela, her manager and husband?! I will die happy knowing which one of these [all equally dishy] fellas is her husband.

Thank you again for taking the trouble to respond to my very previously very ambiguous comment.

        • Yona Holzman-Benshalom says:

          Dear Fiona,
I hope, in principle, that U will live happy rather than die happy, knowing the information U seek…
Unfortunately (for U), I didn’t see that DVD & I have no knowledge what soever as for such details…
If I will ever have the chance to asking somebody about it, & I’ll still remember Ur request, I’ll gladly send it to U.
It’s likely to happen only after yet another visit to Portugal,
that may occur only next summer. I may also get the info here, from a friend who may have that DVD…
In the meantime, if U do get the information, I’ll be happy if U share it here with me (as a comment reply) so I will not put myself into unnecessary efforts by looking it up…
In the meantime, a Happy New Year (yes, our New Year is now; we celebrate it in our country marked by the moon, & not by the sun…).
          All the best,
          Yona

          • Fiona says:

Thank you Yona, and belated Happy New Year. I have emailed her UK press agent, John Crosby and have yet to receive a reply. I will let you know, if I ever find out from him.

            Shalom!

            Fiona.

I wonder if any of you can be of help to me as I am doing pr for a fado singer here in the US and would love any suggestions on magazines, press or media that are interested in that type of music. We have a new release coming out and would like to reach the public.

You can contact me directly at svmediarelations@gmail.com if you prefer. I would appreciate any help that you would give to help get this fantastic music out to the public to create a greater awareness. This is such beautiful, passionate and inspiring music.

If people like Mariza, they should also check out a spanish singer “Buika”.

  17. Joy says:

    Hi Andy,

Just wanted to let you know about a wonderful fadista in the USA, Ramana Vieira, who has a CD that will be out on March 24th: “Lágrimas De Raihna or Tears Of A Queen”. She will be performing in California at the Throckmorton Theater for her release in April and then at Yoshi’s in May. People can discover her music at http://www.RamanaVieira.net. She is bringing a fusion of her American and Portuguese roots together to create something of her own.

  18. Tim c says:

I’ve seen Mariza a few times now. I just saw her tonight in New Bedford MA. She now is using a new “guitarrista” for the portuguese guitar, his name is Angelo Freire this kid is amazing and yes KID. he is only 19. I was just in Lisbon in February and watched him perform at Casa Luso in Alfama (section of Lisbon).

If you are in the area, Mariza is performing a second night at the Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford MA tomorrow 3/14/09

    • Yona Benshalom says:

      Hi Tim c
      Well, I envy U seeing Mariza’s concert, her & her team…
As for the Portuguese guitarra player, Angelo Freire,
I’ve seen /heard him numerous times,
both on Mariza concerts in Portugal & in bars of Lisboa,
      & I cannot agree with U more.
The guy is enormous in his playing’s qualities, & in his singing qualities…
I wish for him that he’ll soon make a disk of his own…
      All the best, Yona

      Hi Tim,
      I have replied to U,
& for some reason I can’t see it submitted… so once again:
I’ve too seen Angelo Freire performing with Mariza in concerts over in Portugal,
      on summer 2008.
I’ve also seen him play & sing in bars in Lisbon.
      The kid’s qualities are amazing!!!
I only wish for him that when the time comes, soon, I hope,
he’ll have the energy, the wish & the means
      to make his own disk.
Diogo, who plays the viola, I think is also as talanted (at least),
      & I wish for him the same…
As I had written to Fiona on the 20.09.2008 :
“on Mariza’s recent tour with Terra disk.

  22. Yona Benshalom says:

    Hi, everybody
Does anybody have any knowledge/information about Mariza’s tour
on end of June or begining of July?
I wish to know if she’s having concerts in Portugal, on those dates,
    where & when…
I plan visiting Portugal at this time,
& wish to see her again…
In her site, the info is just untill May.
In the meantime, many thanks, & all the best,
    Yona
