What dawned on me as I read the post is the question of what's missing? If we have groups of people with common interests, practices, projects etc. and great vision such as save the world (i.e. ourselves) and a whole raft of communication tools - blogs and groupware and skype etc. The thought that comes to mind for me is the domain of "online facilitation" or some new form of online people co-ordinator/ participation encourager role that hasn't been quite named yet.
