To the naked eye, the side of the bridge is lit up red and reflected in the water. But with the length of exposure required to capture what must be considerably lower intensity reflections, the side of the bridge gets whited out. Erm, is that a convincing explanation? Or camera effect? One of the great things about any place - I would say cities, cos I prefer them, but I guess it's true on the countryside - is how sights that are 'just round the corner' are seldom seen.
