Spiney Norman spiney-thumb

I discovered I have a hedgehog who patrols my garden every night, paying a visit to the barbecue in case any tasy morsels have been left behind. Being somewhat shy and nocturnal, hedgehogs are quite difficult to photograph but once he’d done the curling up in a ball thing, i could get quite close so if you are interested in examining the spines, click the thumb.

Interesting hedghog facts:

“Hedgehogs can swim, climb almost vertical walls, and run at speeds of up to two metres per second.”

wow, that close up pic of the hedgehog looks like ‘out-of-it’! Doesn’t even look like it would be part of an animal, looks more like plant-life, a great pic! Tom and I were surprised that hedgehogs could climb almost vertical walls.

Mu, thanks for visiting - here’s another take on hedghog wall climbing skills:

“Hedgehogs are agile creatures and can climb rough walls and chain link fencing with ease, but a smooth vertical surface no more than 400mm high will defeat them. They range quite widely: males over as much as 40 hectares, sometimes travelling several miles in a night; females up to 12 hectares.”
