The frogs have arrived!
At last, the winter must have come to an end. The frogs have arrived in my pond, just the male frogs for now, and weeks later than in some previous years.

In 2001 I reported “5th Feb 2001 - I thought I heard the first frog this afternoon.” and in 2002 “11th March 2002 - Toadspawn appeared overnight and Frogspawn in the morning. That’s 18 days earlier than last year.” so global warming must have been a fact, but this year it’s mid march already and only the male frogs have arrived so far. Spawning may not take place until the next full moon, which is due on April 5th, though I doubt the females will wait that long.
How nice it was to open my back door this evening to let the kitchen heat out and hear the sound of male frogs a calling. I immediately reached for my headlamp and rushed outside to hear the plop plop of several frogs diving for cover, whilst many more remained on the path and pond surroundings.

This year (2006) the males were quieter but on March 28th frogspawn appeared. This seems later again.
